My intention for this piece was to show corruption in government, and how everything we see about politics is really just a show. I was inspired by Annegret Soltau's themes and use of materials because she dealt with difficult topics, and the style of Holly Anne Buck and her collages.

Artistic Inspiration
Process and Planning
Planning
We were told to search through magazines and find images that could be put together in some way to resemble the human form. For my piece, I used National Geographic magazines because I knew they would have high quality images that would be interesting enough to use for my piece. At first, I was just cutting out images that were aesthetically pleasing because I didn't know how I was going to create a person, and have it reflect social and political issues. Another thing I had to think about was the fact that I would have to draw this.

Process
I had several images to choose from and I ended up forming them to be the top half of what could be a human. The pillars represent the ribcage. I constructed the collage and came up with the meaning second. The pillars on the building are often seen on large political buildings in the U.S. as well as other countries, so that would represent the government. The face used was paired with horns from a different image, making the face seem demonic. The image behind the body is that of a stage/theatre. When I began to draw this, I used four different techniques to complete it. I used shading, hatching, cross hatching, and stippling. I started by dividing my paper into sections so that I would hopefully have better proportions. I used pencil first, and then went over it in pen. I used hatching to fill in the pillars where the sun shined in the picture. I used cross hatching to shade the pillars on the darker side. The face was the most difficult part for me and the part I liked the least, which is why I left it in pencil. I didn't want to ruin it with more ink. |

Reflection
I was very pleased with the collage portion of this piece. The drawing part had some redeeming qualities, but I was less impressed with that part. Before we did this project, I thought it was very juvenile. I can't remember the last time I made a collage from magazine pictures. But it actually turned out to be a lot more fun, and difficult, because a higher standard was set for us. This time we weren't in elementary school, we actually had to try and give it a meaning other than a bunch of picture vomit on a page. The drawing part was the hardest for me because I am not that good at drawing, and I really had no motivation at all to do it. The process for this piece was relatively simple, and it produced a collage that I liked. I would consider doing more collages in the future in the style of Collagism.
ACT Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork.
I can identify the cause and effect relationship between my inspiration and my artwork, because like Annegret Soltau, I used different materials, and like Holly-Anne Buck, I chose to keep my piece simple and only have a person from the chest up.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
Overall, the author regards collages, specifically Holly-Anne Bucks, as pieces of art that don't have the sole purpose of being aesthetically pleasing, but they prove a point and are meant to make a statement, and make you think.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
I discovered that people use collages not only for a fun image, but to also convey messages, and can be a useful tool in protesting unfair conditions.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my research was to find an artist who worked with or with similar issues to social or political problems, like Collagism, who began the campaign after Vladimir Putin.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
During my research I inferred that collages do not need to be just from one material. Holly Anne Buck modified her pieces using photoshop, and Soltau used different materials like string in her pieces. You are not limited to certain materials for a collage.
