Artistic Inspiration
Process and Planning
Planning
I knew from the day this piece was introduced to us, that I was going to use Virginia Frances Sterrett as my inspiration. I had seen some of her pieces while researching other artists for the self portrait in semester 1. After I decided that I was going to use Sterretts work to inspire my own, I simply had to chose which pieces I would want to use. I found that I liked all her pieces, so I forced myself to narrow the choices to one of her commissions, which were a series of illustrations in a book of French fairy tales. From there, I chose three pieces which I felt reflected the topic of this piece. The next thing I had to decide was whether or not I wanted to use three canvases or one large one. I eventually chose three canvases but now, I wish that I had chosen one large one, because I could have connected the pieces more smoothly.

Process
To begin this piece, I projected two of the images onto their canvases. For the third piece, the projector was broken, and I found it would be simpler to just draw on the image, and it worked out fine. To begin painting them, I mixed a light pink, a light blue, and a dark blue. I later went over the background again and added the darker pink and yellow for the first canvas, a lighter blue for the second one, and a similar blue for the final canvas. For all the pieces, I used a pink/red color for the tree that connects the pieces, as well as a dark gray and black for the wall that connects the pieces. I used a lot of pink for all the pieces because of the dress the girl wears. I feel that it contrasts well against the black wall. Overall, the painting for this piece was very simple, and the most amount of mixing for paint was for the flowers at the bottom of the first piece. |

Reflection
Overall, I am very pleased with how this piece turned out. The first section is my favorite one. I love the light colors, and how the flowers on her face turned out. I believe it is the best piece out of the three. Overall, it took me about a week to paint all three pieces. At times, it was not fun. I am not the biggest fan of painting, yet I really enjoyed creating this piece. I am really pleased with the colors, although I do believe the color of the backgrounds on the second and third pieces could be better, and show the change of color better. Another thing that I was really proud of was the deer in the second piece. I was worried about painting an animal, but it actually turned out really good apart from the back legs that look a little messed up. If I was able to redo this piece I would chose lighter colors for all of the backgrounds because I really like how it looks, and how you can see the transition of color in the first one the best.
ACT Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork.
I was able to identify the effect my inspiration had on my piece because I used many of the light soft colors contrasted with a dark ground or background like Sterrett used in her work.

Throughout my research, I discovered that Sterrett continued to work through her health issues, and while she took three years to finish a commission, she continued doing what she loved.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my inspirational research was to find pieces that were calming, and I found that Sterrets work was published in a book of fairy tales, and so that fit the theme for me.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
During my research, I inferred that during Sterretts short life, her illustrations were her biggest success.
