"Great Depth III: Musing"
Acrylic on Canvas
36 in x 36 in
December 2016
Exhibition Text:
The intention for Musing is to be a closing piece for the last two pieces done about the ocean. Musing is the act of being in deep reflection or thought, and being alone at sea, I feel that is something you would be able to do. This piece allowed me to work on a larger scale with paint on canvas.

Artistic Inspiration
Planning and Process
After this, I began to paint the boat, first using a light gray as a base for the boat, and later going over it again with a darker gray to create the lines to mak the boat look like it was actually made from wood. I did the same with the edge of the boat, using a mix of dark gray and blue. When painting the sky, I repainted it white, and then mixed a light blue and painted around the white part. I slowly started making the blue lighter around that area, and started blending more and more white in, until I had painted it completly white again. I made skin tone using white, yellow, red and a small amount of brown. I would mix this with white and brown to make different parts of my face like my eyebrows and the lighter and darker parts of my eyes and nose. The last thing I painted was my hair. I mixed brown with a small amount of black, and painted a bottom layer. Then I added some white to the paint I mixed to create a lighter brown, and again after that to get the different colors in my hair.
Reflection
Overall, I was unimpressed by this piece. I also rediscovered that I hate painting. Im pleased with how the water and the sky turned out. The boat, I wasn't sure of at first, but after a while of just staring at it, I started liking it more. The hair I was fine with, but I feel like I could have done better. The parts I am the most unhappy with are the hands and face. My hands would be the beiggest failure on this piece. My face is fine, but it seems very flat, and plain. I think my biggest success with this piece was the sky. I am the most pleased with how it turned out. In general, I feel this piece could have been much better. Regardless, I think it is mediocre.
ACT Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork.
I was able to identify the effect my inspiration had on my piece because I used many shades of blue, similar to Picasso during his blue period, as well as the fact that I portrayed myself looking somber.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The author has regarded Picassos blue period as a period of depression for Picasso that did not end with the beginning of his rose period, but rather ended with the end of his cubist period, and that his blue period has some of his most well known pieces.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Through my research, I discovered that Picassos blue period was influenced by a specific event, and not just a time in his life when he was depressed.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my inspirational research was to find something involving the ocean to have a closing piece for the other Great Depth pieces I have created this year.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
While reading my research, I could infer that the death of Casagemas, Picassos friend influenced a major part of life and his career as a painter.
