Artistic Inspiration
Tiphanie Brookes, otherwise known as Antigirl is a mixed media artist and graphic designer. Her work often shows contrary attitudes, which she describes as sweet and punk. She makes pieces that include print and design, illustration, photography, screen printing, painting, and photoshop. Her work is intended to make you ask what is real. What it relevant in the world.
I though that Brooke would be a good artist for inspiration for this piece because of her limited use of color and how she made her collages with photos. Like Brooke, I planned on using photos, and paint for my collage. I liked her limited use of color, it proved to be an emphasis of her pieces. Another aspect I liked about her art where the use of geometric shapes and line to create movement and draw attention to certain parts, which I attempted to do as well. |

Based on the photos that I was able to find,I was able to relate this piece back to previous pieces that I have made relating the human actions and their effect on the ocean and marine life. The photos include animals like sharks, whales, polar bears, and fish, as well as a human face and outstretched hand.
Humans have a lot of impact on the ocean and the animals that live in it and rely on it being a certain way. Because of human actions like the continuous burning of fossil fuels when there are cleaner energy options available, polluting the oceans, and the extreme amount of greenhouse gasses being released which heat the earth. This heating of the earth causes melting of arctic glaciers which causes the sea level to rise, and the ocean to warm and become more acidic. This can be very harmful to their lives, and to our own if sea levels keep rising.

Planning and Process
Planning
The most planning that this piece took was finding the photos that I would want to use, and how I would use them to convey a message. I also needed to figure out how I would position all the photos. I decided to make the person and hand connect, and be the center of the piece, similar to Brooke's work. Then around that person I just had to decide how I wanted all the smaller photos to fit around that piece. I used the larger picture of the shark to cover the connection of the hand and neck. I also though that a shark going between the fingers would be an interesting thing to do. When mostly ocean themed pictures were the ones that were cut out, I was pretty happy because the ocean and human impacts has been the theme of a previous piece, and I am excited to continue with that topic. So this piece, along with a previous block print, and dry point piece, will reflect human actions on ocean life. |
Process
The process for this piece was relatively simple. I had reused old stretchers for a canvas, put new canvas on, and gessoed it. The next thing that I did was look through old National Geographic magazines and cut out any photos that I thought would work together. In the end, all the photos that I cut out with the exception of the face and the hand had to do with the ocean, and all photos had a blue tone. I then painted the canvas a light blue, and began to place the photos where I might want them. After that, I drew light lines where everything was so that I would be able to place them in the same spot. I later used black paint, and blue paint to make some designs over the photos in a similar style to Brooke. I found it was easiest to paint the circles if I mixed the black paint with a little bit of water. This made it spread easier, and allowed for a better outline when I went over it again with paint, with not water. |

Experimentation
Something that Brooke does, specifically as part of her All Heart in L.A. pieces, is drip paint, or at least paint in a way that it looks like it was dripped over a surface. I tried to do this, and it didn't really work for me. I was interested in doing it for this piece, but I did not want to do it if it was not going to look good. |
Reflection
Overall, I believe this piece was alright. It was fun to make. I had originally planned for this piece to not be blue, because so many have been blue, and I was aiming to do a different color for each piece, but that's just how this one turned out, with the pictures that I was able to find in magazines. Fortunately, most of the pictures I liked were blue, and relatively ocean themed. I was really excited for this piece because I love the style that Brooke uses for her art. A big success for this piece would be finding photos that related to one another, and would fit with a blue tone nicely. Something that I would change if I were to do this piece again would be the size of the canvas. Theres more blank space than I would like, and while Brooke has blank space on her collages, it is not something that I ended up liking. Also if I could have found more photos to add I would want to do that, as well as add some text. Brooke has text in some of her collages and I think that could fill up some of the blank space in my piece.
ACT Questions
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork.
This piece was inspired by Antigirl's mixed media paintings of one main painted color with black accents, and what seems like magazine or newspaper cut outs.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The author regards Brooke as a very versatile artist, as she works with many different mediums.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
While I was researching my inspiration, I concluded that people are more interested in art when it is where it seemingly "shouldn't be", as her All Heart in L.A. works are her most recognized.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea around my research was to find a mixed media artist who combined different styles in their work, like Brooke describes her work as being sweet and punk.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I inferred during my research that art displayed on a more local level will draw more attention.
