Artistic Inspiration
Andy Warhol was my inspiration for this piece. Warhol was a significant artist in the Pop Art movement in the early 1960's. His most well known pieces are his comic like images, and images of Marilyn Monroe, and the Campbell's soup cans. He also did a variety of prints of his cat, which are painted in different vibrant colors. I think it will be interesting to bring bright, vibrant colors to contrast what my intended meaning is.
What I am choosing to emulate for this piece are his various different prints of his cat Sam. I chose to do this because of a cat that I had as a child. She only had three legs, because one had to be amputated. She had been a stray, and got her foot injured. Her name was Tripod, which looking back at that name, is a little cruel. I want to do these prints to represent animals that are strays or abused, and show the issues that they face.

Planning and Process
Planning
There were several different prints by Warhol that I used as inspiration for my piece. Overall, from my planning sketches, I wanted to show different unfortunate circumstances that specifically stray or abused animals can face. Based directly off of one of my cats that I had, two of the cats only have three legs. One of the cat is missing an eye.

Process
The first thing that I did after my planning sketches was start carving into the dry point plate. After carving all three plates, I soaked paper in water for five minutes. I used gloves, newsprint and oil based ink to do the print. I used a small scoop of ink and spread the ink over the plate, spreading it through all the grooves. After the plates were covered, I ripped up pieces of newsprint and used the to wipe away the ink. Once the ink was wiped away, I folded a piece of newsprint to act as a folder, placed the piece of paper the was soaking in water on top of it, and placed the carving plate on top of that. I then placed it face up on the press and ran it through one time. I repeated this with all three different plates. After they were dry, I painted them. Warhol often used vibrant colors for these pieces, and they were never too dark so that the print would still be seen under the color. |

Experimentation
Some of the prints that I did were too light because I wiped too much ink away, and some were too dark, but that worked out because I ended up having to paint over them anyway. |

Reflection
In theory, I was really going to like this piece, and I still do, but I have a lot of issues with it. I love cats, and I love fun colored cats. I had fun making this piece, from drawing it, to carving it, and to painting them. However I do think that they could have turned out much better had I taken more time in the planning stages of this piece. If I were to do this piece again, I would definitely make more prints to have more of a variety to choose from, and I would maybe paint them all the same color, even though Warhol did not do that. I feel like doing a lot of different colors like that looks sloppy. I like it in Warhol's work, but not my own.
